A winter storm watch was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 8:39 p.m. valid from Thursday 4 p.m. until Friday 4 p.m. for Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, Tioga, Broome, Delaware and Sullivan counties.
The weather service says to expect, “Heavy wet snow possible. Total snow accumulation of 7 inches or more possible in the higher elevations and up to 4 inches in lower elevations.”
“The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes,” explains the weather service. “Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation. Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.”
