The first winter shot brings snow and slippery roads: code yellow for slippery conditions until 9 am

As predicted, the first winter shot is a fact. The first melting snow fell on Wednesday evening in the province of Antwerp, among others. The RMI warns of slippery roads throughout the country until 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, except in West Flanders. So pay attention if you have to go on the road.

Snow fell from the sky on Wednesday, although in large parts of Flanders it was mainly melting snow. Nevertheless, it produced winter scenes.

The RMI has issued a code yellow for slippery conditions until 9 am. At the end of the night it clears out, allowing the temperature to quickly drop a few degrees. As a result, ice spots can develop in most places in our country – with the exception of the coast – due to the freezing of wet road sections, which can lead to problems during the morning rush hour.

The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) started its annual winter service on Wednesday evening. “It is the first winter injection with spreading actions tonight,” the agency reports.

Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder (N-VA) was allowed to give the starting signal for the winter service in the city of Antwerp around 7:30 PM. “The gritters and cycle path spreaders are ready to guarantee the safety of road users on highways, regional roads and cycle paths.”

The AWV emphasizes that there is sufficient salt in stock next winter. Together with the suppliers, a total of 103,000 tons of spreading material would be ready. Finally, the agency asks that driving behavior be adapted to the weather conditions.
