Behind the front, temperatures will crash, bottoming out in the mid-30s by Thursday morning. Off-and-on snow showers can be expected throughout the day as highs struggle to get out of the 30s.

A Winter Storm Warning will take effect Thursday night and continue through Friday night for the higher elevations of Westmoreland and Fayette counties. The higher elevations of Indiana County will go under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Steady snow is expected to develop by daybreak Friday morning, and where it is colder, snow will not have issues sticking. In addition, winds could gust as 35 mph leading to whiteout conditions at times. Travel will be very difficult over the higher terrain, where over 6″ of snow could accumulate through the day Friday.

For the lower elevation areas, snow will have a harder time sticking due to more marginal temperatures. However, the intensity could still be enough to offset this and lead to a coating to a slushy inch or two, mainly early Friday before a possible changeover to rain by the afternoon.

The storm will wrap up this weekend with the last of any rain or snow showers ending by noon Saturday. Temperatures will moderate a bit with highs by Sunday approaching 50.
