This November 20, 2024, Météo France has placed 49 departments on orange alert for snow, ice and wind. The passage of the Caetano depression risks causing significant disruptions throughout France.
Weather France placed four new departments on orange alert for risks of snow and ice on Thursday, bringing the total to 32 departments, while 17 others are on orange wind alert, according to a bulletin published Wednesday afternoon.
The worst of Thursday's episode
“On Thursday, the Caetano depression will cross France from west to east and will generate snowfall to the north of its trajectory on an axis going from North Brittany/Normandy to the Grand-Est, and strong winds in its southern part, notably from the Atlantic coasts to the Alps”, noted Meteo France.
For the wind, the site specifies that this is a “winter storm occurring several times a year, requiring special vigilance due to expected strong winds.” Concerning snow and ice vigilance, he describes a “early winter episode for the regions concerned and sufficiently notable to make traffic conditions difficult.”
Weather France warns that at this level of vigilance, “Electricity and telephone outages can affect distribution networks for relatively long periods of time.” Moreover “roofs and chimneys may be damaged. Tree branches may break. Vehicles may be displaced. Road traffic may be disrupted, particularly on the secondary network in forest areas”list the meteorologists.
And in the Occitanie region?
Occitanie will not be the region most affected by the episode, although disturbances, lighter than in the northern half, may occur. Starting with the wind, which will blow across all of its departments, with the exception of Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales.
Concerning precipitation, risks of snow or ice are expected in Lozère only, placed on yellow alert. Otherwise, in Aveyron, rain is forecast.
