In a barely believable video in the Mediterranean, a fisherman filmed a great white shark near Port-Cros (Var). An extremely rare fact because the species has almost disappeared in this area for a long time.

The surprise is enormous. Between the islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros, a white shark was seen about two weeks ago, filmed by an amateur fisherman. On his small boat, the man had the reflex to grab his phone. He had no idea that he had just come across a young specimen of around four meters, an extremely rare experience. “Seeing a white shark in the Mediterranean is an exceptional phenomenon whether here or in any country, it is a species threatened with extinction”explains a marine biologist.

Since the Middle Ages, there have only been around forty encounters in the Mediterranean, the last dating back to 2022 off the coast of the Camargue. The white shark suffered greatly from the film Jaws because it is not a man-eater, as the scientists who had the chance to swim alongside it point out.
