“They hung up on me when I gave it”: the grandson of Louis De Funès confides in the “burden” that his name constituted

In his show “Deux Funès”, Laurent de Funès pays tribute to his famous grandfather while recounting his personal journey in the shadow of this emblematic name. At 60, he talks about his difficulties, his ambitions and his desire to finally assert himself on stage.

In his show “Deux Funès”, Laurent de Funès looks back on his journey, marked by the fame of his grandfather, Louis de Funès. If he recognizes that this inheritance is an “extraordinary chance”, he also admits that he has long felt the weight of this name. “In show business, it can be a burden”he confides. “It’s a bit like climbing Everest with a pair of flip-flops.”

The pressure of the name

From his childhood, Laurent de Funès dreamed of doing comedy, but it took many years before he really dared to get started. “The doors were not open”he confides. “I was hung up on several times when I gave my name.” It was finally at the age of over 60, after a career in advertising and writing, that he launched into entertainment, with the desire to “really be yourself”. “I wrote this one on stage to tell about my difficulties, but also the pleasure I found in it”he adds.

Today, Laurent de Funès no longer has any complexes about assuming his name. When we talk about his grandfather’s facial expressions and style, he categorically refuses to be a simple imitation. “I am not a copy, I am me”he says. Laurent, who embodies his own style on stage, wants above all to be faithful to his own personality.

At over 60 years old, Laurent de Funès is reconciled with his past and his family heritage. His show is a way for him to share his doubts and his victories with the public. The public will be able to discover “Deux Funès” during its next dates, in Verviers on November 24 and in Namur on November 27. A show which promises to reveal a Laurent de Funès more sincere and freer than ever.
