Historic victory at the Miss Universe pageant: 21-year-old Victoria Kjær Theilvig is the first Danish woman ever to win the coveted crown.

Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, 21, from Denmark is the new Miss Universe. At the 73rd edition of the renowned beauty pageant in Mexico City, the former professional dancer and animal rights activist beat 126 competitors. It is the first victory by a Danish participant in the history of the competition.

In an emotional finale, Theilvig was crowned by her predecessor Sheynnis Palacios, 24, from Nicaragua. The Dane, who works in the diamond trade, beat Miss Nigeria in the final sprint, while Miss Mexico took third place. “I stand here today because I want to make history and bring about change,” the visibly emotional winner said in her victory speech, according to CNN.

Inclusion in focus

The competition, which has been held since 1952, set a special example for more inclusion this year. For the first time there was no longer an age limit – the oldest participant was 40-year-old Miss Malta Beatrice Njoya, herself a mother of three. Married women and mothers were admitted for the first time last year. With Cuba, a nation returned to the competition for the first time after a 57-year break. Belarus, Eritrea and the Maldives also celebrated their premieres. Germany was represented by Pia Theissen, 26, from Cologne.

The decision was made after several rounds in which the candidates had to demonstrate their skills. After an initial pre-selection of the top 30 based on the preliminary rounds on Thursday, which also included a spectacular national costume competition, a swimwear show followed. The remaining twelve participants then presented themselves in elegant evening gowns. In the final question round, the final five candidates had to demonstrate their quick wit and skill in dealing with complex issues such as leadership and resilience.

Robin Thicke provided the musical accompaniment

The new Miss Universe particularly impressed with her authentic nature. When asked how she would live if no one judged her, Theilvig answered confidently: “I wouldn’t change anything – I live every day the way I am.” The show was hosted by “Saved by the Bell” star Mario Lopez, 51, and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, 32, while singer Robin Thicke, 47, and Black Eyed Peas singer Taboo, 49, hosted the show provided musical entertainment.
