The renowned Spaniard Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he will not participate in singles matches at the upcoming Davis Cup if he’s not feeling up to the mark. With a singles record of just 12 wins and 7 losses in 2024, Nadal’s last competitive match took place during the Paris Olympics in August, where he suffered a second-round defeat against his old nemesis, Novak Djokovic, who went on to claim the gold medal. Nadal did, however, make a notable appearance in the doubles category, reaching the quarterfinals alongside rising star Carlos Alcaraz.
Following a brief stint of playing two exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia last month, Nadal stressed his commitment to the team. “I have already told Spain’s captain David Ferrer on several occasions not to make any decisions influenced by the fact that this is my final week as a professional tennis player,” he remarked. “The team comes first, and he should not feel pressured in the slightest by any surrounding buzz due to my situation. He must prioritize what is best for the team, which is my ultimate wish.”
