Jannik Sinner is in the final at ATP Finals 2024. For the second time in a row, the Italian reaches the title match in Turin, after the one lost in 2023 against Novak Djokovicnot participating in the tournament this year.
After the victory on Daniil Medvedev in the third match of the round robin, the world number 1 Ilie Nastase finished at the top of the group, undefeated, thanks also to the successes obtained against Alex de Minaur and against Taylor Fritz.
In the semi-final, the blue meets the group’s runner-up John Newcombe: Casper Ruud.
A lightning start from Sinner, who dominates the first three games, playing precise, fast, powerful and uncatchable balls for the Norwegian. However, he recovers, starting to defend at his best and taking advantage of the Italian’s missed first serves too many times in a row. But Sinner recovers immediately, imposes his game and is unstoppable, continuing like a train and closing the first set in his favor: 6-1 in 30 minutes.
The second set is more balanced, with both players taking home their serves. The rhythm is broken when Sinner breaks his opponent’s serve and takes the lead at 3-2, with Ruud giving in at the fourth break point. It’s great tennis between the two, but Sinner is on another level, relentless in this semi-final: another break in favor and the result is 5-2. Served for the match, and it’s over: 6-2, 2-0 for the world number 1.
In the final, Sinner will find Fritz again. In the other semi-final, in fact, the American got the better of Alexander Zverev per 2-1.
Protagonist of a very balanced match, where both contenders gave their all to reach the coveted final, Fritz got the better of Zverev in the third set, the hardest fought, played ball after ball for more than an hour. It was right to go to the tie break, in an absolutely balanced match that provided a great spectacle.
It’s been since 2006, with James Blake in Shanghai, which lacked an American finalist at the ATP Finals, and the latest stars and stripes winner is to be found in Pete Sampras in 1999.
The match will decide the winner of the tournament being played Sunday 17 Novemberagain on the indoor court of the Inalpi Arena in Turin, after the doubles final.
