Interview
Since your arrival at the club in 2014, you have had the chance to participate in numerous Coupe de France campaigns. Which is the most striking?
The most notable is the campaign of the 2018-2019 season, where we eliminated Le Havre at home in the round of 16, in a match where we expected to suffer. Then finally, we ended up winning 3-0 and moving on to the next round against Lyon-La Duchère at home. During this meeting, we thought we would go out since we were down 2-0 after 20 minutes, but ultimately, we managed to turn the game around and win 3-2 in the last minute. This shows us that this kind of course is worthless. During the first matches, we had difficulty against R3 and R2 and, in the end, we realized that we were capable of raising our level of play as the competition progressed.
What has this competition represented since the start of your career?
I find that the Coupe de France allows us to highlight the amateurs over the professionals. It's a unique competition, where the first rounds are very difficult and motivation is sometimes hard to find when you face small teams. However, these first rounds are very important, since they are what allow us to face big teams. Finally, for my part, it is a competition that is ticked off every year, in particular thanks to the few courses that I have been able to complete.
Since August, you have started your 14th senior season. Do you feel that, as the years go by, these courses in the Coupe de France have a particular flavor?
Obviously, I realize that I'm getting older (laughs) and so I now appreciate all the cutting tricks. Even if today I am still in good shape, it is possible that everything stops with an injury, so you have to know how to enjoy these matches. And then, when you're 32, you tell yourself that you're getting closer to the end than the beginning, so, as they say, you have to enjoy it. Although I don't hope it's the last, because I would like to experience at least 3 or 4 more.
What can your journey bring to the group in this competition?
I think my role is to provide confidence and calm down younger people who might be stressed. Because, when you play in a full stadium, it's not the same as when you play a championship match. There, clearly, we will have to talk to young people, because when I experienced that, I was also impressed, despite the fact that I had passed through Brest and that I had already played in slightly larger stadiums. Finally, even if, for my part, I love this type of match and it gives me good stress, I know that this is not the case for everyone and that some can have bad stress.
What makes you say that the team is capable of achieving an exploit against Stade Lavallois?
I know that in one match, we are capable of achieving something great. Our team is a team of friends, we get along well and there is good competition, so I feel like we can do something. Afterwards, I think that our offensive power can make the difference, since we are one of the best attacks in the championship, so offensively, we are capable of doing things that can put them in difficulty. However, all this will depend on our start to the match. If we don't concede a goal in the first 20 minutes, we can achieve an achievement.
Finally, does a poster like this, against a professional team in the 7th round, come too soon?
I would say that yes, it's a little too early, since clearly, we hope to play smaller teams to go as far as possible. Afterwards, this match can bring something to our season, because if we achieve the feat, it will create a group effect and strengthen the team. So I think this match is a double-edged sword, because if we are eliminated by being humiliated, it could make us lose confidence for the rest of the season.
