[MAJ 18h15 avec l’hommage de Pierre Hurmic]
Micheline Chaban-Delmas died this Friday, November 15, 2024, as revealed by our colleagues at South West. The former First Lady of Bordeaux, widow of Jacques Chaban-Delmas, died in the night. She was 95 years old.
Born Micheline Chavelet in 1929, she was presented by François Mitterrand to Jacques Chaban-Delmas who married her for the third time in 1971. The politician was then Prime Minister of Georges Pompidou and, above all, mayor of Bordeaux since 1947.
Figure of Bordeaux
Micheline Chaban-Delmas quickly became a respected figure of the Gironde capital. From her office at the Palais Rohan, she works for the development of cultural life and is committed to the fight against drugs through the Addiction and Youth Prevention Foundation.
She notably influenced the municipal team to entrust the creation of the Contemporary Plastic Arts Center (CAPC) to Jean-Louis Froment, then a professor at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts. The building, inaugurated in May 1984, is today a must-see museum of the city.
Inauguration of the bridge, the statue on Place Pey Berland, presentation of books… Since the death of Jacques Chaban-Delmas in 2000, his widow was present at the conferences, ceremonies and other tributes, guardian discreet from his memory.
« Micheline Chaban-Delmas played an important role in the cultural life of Bordeaux,” underlined current mayor Pierre Hurmic in a tribute published on X (formerly Twitter) this Friday afternoon. “The one we nicknamed “Madame” at the Palais Rohan left us today. On behalf of the people of Bordeaux, I would like to pay tribute to this discreet and elegant woman who gave a lot to our city. »
She will remain in the memory of the people of Bordeaux and those who came into contact with her, always recognizable by her white hair pulled back and immortalized by Karl Lagerfeld around ten years ago.
