Nathalie Bajos, sociologist and research director at Inserm, was the guest on Franceinfo's 11 a.m./1 p.m. show, Thursday November 14. She returned to the study published the day before by her institute on the subject of the sexuality of the French, and in particular of young people.

The National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) published a vast survey on French sexuality on Wednesday, November 13. “The age of entry into sexuality (…) has, for the first time in several decades, started to increase from the mid-2000s”explains Nathalie Bajos, sociologist and research director at Inserm, Thursday on franceinfo. According to the Inserm survey, it is today 18.2 years for women and 17.7 years for men.

This increase in the age of entry into sexuality “depends on several factors”explains Nathalie Bajos. She mentions the fact that “the effects of the economic crisis have had an impact on young people, who are leaving their parental home later, so there is social autonomy which is a little delayed”. “There was also an effect of the Covid epidemic”with confinements but also the deterioration of “the state of mental health of young people”even if the latter subject is a problem “prior” to the pandemic, indicates the sociologist. Nathalie Bajos also argues that “the forms of entry into sexuality change over time, and the centrality of the penetrative relationship becomes less and less important, including among the very young”.
