COP 29: Minister of Ecological Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher will not attend the summit organized in Baku: News

The Minister of Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, announced on Wednesday November 13 in the Senate that she would not go to COP 29 organized in Baku. Indeed, the Azerbaijani president attacked Emmanuel Macron and head-on.

During a session in the Senate on Wednesday November 13, the Minister of Ecological Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher declared that she would not go to Baku (Azerbaijan) to participate in COP 29. This withdrawal is explained by the declarations of the Azeri president against Emmanuel Macron this Wednesday, reported Le Figaro.

The minister was tasked, on Monday, with representing France at this climate summit, Emmanuel Macron having refused to go there amid tensions between the two countries. France had notably condemned the Azerbaijani military offensive against the Armenian separatists of Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023.

A column signed by several political figures

In a speech delivered this Wednesday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev severely attacked France, denouncing the country's colonial history and “crimes” of “President Macron's regime” in its overseas territories, particularly in New Caledonia. These statements provoked anger on the French side. “Direct attacks against our country, its institutions and its territories are unjustifiable”declared Agnès Pannier-Runacher during the question session to the government in the Senate. She accused Azerbaijan of exploiting “the fight against climate change for an unworthy personal agenda”.

Several French political figures had already called for France to boycott this summit organized in Baku. In a column published in Le Figaro, Anne Hidalgo, Laurent Wauquiez and Yannick Jadot notably demanded “the immediate and unconditional release of the Armenian hostages, the right to the safe return of the 120,000 refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh (…) and respect for the territorial integrity of Armenia”.
