The Ecuadorian Football community is mourning the profound loss of Marco Angulo Solórzano, a promising 22-year-old player who passed away after spending 35 days in intensive care due to severe injuries sustained in a car accident. This heartbreaking news has touched fans, teammates, and officials alike, marking the farewell to a young talent who shone in both national and international teams and left a mark in every club he represented.
The accident occurred on October 7 on the General Rumiñahui Highway in Quito when the vehicle carrying Marco and several other players crashed into a construction beam of a pedestrian bridge. The collision also claimed the lives of Roberto Cabezas Simisterra of Independiente Juniors and Víctor Charcopa Nazareno of Cuniburo FC. On that fateful day, Marco, his sister (the driver), and other passengers sustained serious injuries.
Angulo’s multiple injuries— which included a pelvic fracture, right pneumothorax, cerebral edema, and internal bleeding—necessitated a complex craniectomy to reduce intracranial pressure. During his recovery, his teammates from Liga de Quito and the Ecuadorian national team continually sent messages of support, but despite the medical efforts, he couldn’t overcome the critical condition. His club, Liga de Quito, expressed their sorrow: “We have lost a warrior, someone who left a deep mark on all who knew him,” the institution stated in a farewell announcement.
