Put on your winter coat and tie a big scarf around your neck: these winter reflexes have been adopted by many French people since Monday, November 11, 2024. The cause is a cold drop from northern Europe.
What is a cold drop?
According to Météo France, a cold drop “is a pocket of very cold air located at an altitude of more than 5,000 m” which can lead to “unsettled weather, with showers, sometimes consisting of sleet down to the ground, associated with strong gusts of wind”.
On its website, the agency in charge of observing and forecasting weather phenomena specifies that cold drops are often not easy to predict: “The trajectory of these isolated systems, which control general circulation, is sometimes difficult to understand using meteorological models”we learn thus.
What are the forecasts in Sarthe?
In the West, a cooler air mass arrived on Monday evening and will persist “at least until Friday”. The forecasts are then very uncertain but Météo France announces “possible light morning frosts Thursday and Friday” and a “sky changing over the days, with possibility of clearings”.
At daybreak, temperatures will remain between 5 and 6°C from Wednesday to Friday before dropping to 3°C on Saturday morning. They will rise again on Sunday and Monday before probably falling again in the middle of next week.
In the afternoon, temperatures will not exceed 10°C before Sunday. That day, the sky will be filled with large gray clouds which will again cause showers to fall on the department.
