Affected by a fire which did not cause any casualties, Monday November 11, the Christmas village of Barcarès (Pyrénées-Orientales) hopes to open next week, reports France Bleu Roussillon.
The town hall expresses its “sadness“and his”consternation“and assures”do everything possible to allow the opening next week“. The inauguration was initially scheduled for Saturday.
The damage extends over an area of 3,000 square meters without having damaged the various attractions on site (rides, ice rink, toboggan run, etc.). The seven large wooden chalets destroyed by the flames were to accommodate the catering part. Four refrigerated trucks were also destroyed and three shipping containers, which were used as storage. The fire also caused the explosion of around twenty gas cylinders.
“The causes of this fire are probably accidental, but we remain awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation. We will keep the public informed of any developments regarding the situation“, specify the organizers in a press release. Around sixty firefighters were mobilized to fight against the flames. The intervention of the emergency services made it possible to prevent the fire from spreading to the Lydia, the famous liner stuck in the sand on the beach.
The Barcarès Christmas village, which is celebrating its 25th edition this year, attracts around a million visitors each winter, mainly from France and Spain.
