A diplomatic incident occurred last Thursday, November 7, on the sidelines of Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot's visit to Jerusalem, Israel. This is why the Israeli ambassador, Joshua Zarka, is summoned this Tuesday, November 12 to the Quai d'Orsay, BFMTV learned from consistent sources this Monday.
An “unacceptable situation”
Jean-Noël Barrot denounced an “unacceptable situation” after refusing to enter Eléona, a French national estate in East Jerusalem, due to the presence of armed Israeli security forces there.
The Israeli security forces having “entered in an armed manner, without first obtaining authorization from France and without agreeing to leave,” the minister told the press.
“The entry into force of Israeli security constitutes an unprecedented decision, which makes it so serious,” a diplomatic source told BFMTV.
Two French gendarmes arrested
In addition to this episode, two French gendarmes were arrested and then released by the Israeli police that same day. “After the departure of the delegation, two staff from the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem were arrested by Israeli security even though they are agents with diplomatic status,” said the press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a press release, the Israeli police assured that the two gendarmes, “initially unidentified”, had “refused entry to the site to the Israeli agents responsible for security” of Jean-Noël Barrot. The Israeli Foreign Ministry, for its part, denied being at the origin of any diplomatic incident.
