Gabigol says he won't stay at Flamengo, and criticizes Tite and the board

Flamengo was still celebrating the fifth Brazilian Cup title on one side and; on the other, Gabigol said goodbye to the red and black team. The striker, who only has a contract until the end of the year, poked fun at former coach Tite and the board this Sunday, the 10th. The tendency is for the player to go to Cruzeiro.

“That was my last final. I'm not staying at Flamengo. Things happened that I didn't like”, began the striker, in an interview with broadcasters, on the lawn of Arena MRV.

Gabigol's numbers for Flamengo

  • 302 games
  • 160 goals
  • 42 assists
  • 13 titles

“I am very excited. I have affection for Flamengo. Now I have to make the most of these remaining games and be able to say goodbye to the fans. I'm not staying at Flamengo, in recent years there have been negotiations, the president, the board, shook my hand, my father's, and then things happened that I really didn't like. I always found out about things through the podcast, never in person. I spoke to Marcos Braz to stay for two, three years, but there was never an offer from Flamengo”, said the player.

Gabigol arrived at Flamengo in 2019 and won 13 titles. In total, there were 302 games, 160 goals and 42 assists. The season, as the athlete himself said, was “troubled”. From the initial suspension for doping to the bad relationship with then coach Tite.

“It was a turbulent year for me individually. There was the issue of doping, then a coach who didn't respect me as a player. During those moments, I never tried to express it in any way, but it was a horrible time for me. But I always worked, I always tried to improve. I always tried to show him that I could help in some way”, added the player.

In the list of titles with the Flamengo shirt, Gabigol has two Conmebol Libertadores (2019 and 2022), two Brazilians (2019 and 2020) and two Brazilian Cups (2022 and 2024).

Cruzeiro, the 28-year-old striker's likely destination, has not yet confirmed contact with the player. Even so, in the mixed interview area at Arena MRV, Flamengo's vice-president of football, Marcos Braz, confirmed the player's move to Raposa:

“For me, it was a plausible and normal situation for him to [Gabigol] go to Cruzeiro. In the same way that he had the possibility of going, a while ago, to Palmeiras; Corinthians back there… And now, as always happens in football, the player chose another club. He understood that Cruzeiro would be a good option”, said Braz.
