The Nitto ATP Finals are 55 years old and Turin is preparing to host the event for the fourth consecutive year. In Turin there will be eight of the best nine players in the world, all except 37-year-old Novak Djokovic. In his place is rookie Alex De Minaur. The Australian is the 147th player to participate in the tournament, the seventh representative of his country after Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, John Newcombe, Pat Cash, Patrick Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.
Last year there were 2 debutants (Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune), as well as in 2022 (Felix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz), and in 2021 there were 4 (Cameron Norrie, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz). To find a season with one or no rookies you have to go back to 2015 (none).
For the big names competing this year it will be the seventh appearance for Zverev, the sixth for Medvedev, the fifth for Rublev, the third for Ruud and Sinner, the second for Alcaraz and Fritz. Zverev has won the title twice, Medvedev once, Ruud and Sinner have one final each, Fritz, Alcaraz and Rublev have at most one appearance in the semi-final.
HIGHEST NUMBER OF GAMES WON – Roger Federer has been in charge for over 13 years. The Swiss equaled Ivan Lendl's record of 39 hits by winning the 2011 final against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Then the Basel champion extended his record to 59 matches won: the first ever on 12 November 2002 by beating Juan Carlos Ferrero 63 64 and the last on 14 November 2019 when in the round robin he beat Novak Djokovic 64 63. This is the complete ranking: Federer 59, Djokovic 50, Lendl 39, Becker 36, Sampras 35, Agassi and Nastase 22, Nadal 21, McEnroe 19, Connors and Edberg 18.
GREATER NUMBER OF PARTICIPATIONS – Also in this ranking Federer leads with 17 participations, second Djokovic with 16, then Agassi with 13, Lendl with 12, Nadal, Becker, Sampras and Connors with 11. Just under double figures are Edberg and McEnroe with 9, Vilas and Murray with 8.
GREATER NUMBER OF QUALIFICATIONS – Some players missed the ATP Finals due to injury, but nevertheless qualified. Among these once also Federer and Djokovic, but above all Nadal with 6 renunciations and Connors with 5. For this reason the qualifying ranking sees Federer first with 18, Djokovic second with 17 equal to Nadal, Connors fourth with 16, then Agassi 15, Lendl 13, Becker and Sampras 11.
