There are streaks. Moments when nothing comes out and others when everything comes out. Las Palmas is a clear example of this mutation, through Diego Martínez. His pupils knew the survival manual well: be serious at the back and bite at the top. Proven effectiveness and more if luck is on your side. Fabio Silva scored first time and the Canaries backed down to safeguard the loot. And the closer Rayo’s assault seemed, Aridane made it 0-2 on his own goal and Manu Fuster immediately sentenced it. The franjirrojos had 34 shots in total – the record in a LaLiga match – but they would have remained scoreless if it had not been for McKenna’s own goal, which made up the score. On the other hand, two shots on goal were enough for the visitors to lead 0-3. Three weeks and nine points out of twelve have been enough for the sun to rise again on the islands.
Vallecas was in the mood to party and the first chords of the game were promising. Friday night fever. Camello ate Álex Suárez with speed, but he lacked precision and his shot died outside the net. He couldn’t take out his guitar to celebrate. Las Palmas were much more lethal in a corner, kicked by Sandro and headed by Fabio Silva directly into the goal. His arrow made it 0-1 in the 6′. The blow did not dent the Rayistas’ spirits, which ruined the tie with a set piece. Lejeune tried with a foul and more dangerous was his header on a corner kick that Gumbau had given him. From head to wood. From emotion to sigh. There was no rest. Battle quelled a header from Moleiro and De Frutos and Álvaro sent missiles from both sides of Cillessen. He was still intact.
The franjirrojos were fine-tuning and taking possession, but they needed to find the cracks through which to desecrate the Canarian wall. It was almost broken by Chavarría, whose shot crashed into Cillessen, and Gumbau, who crossed it too far. On both occasions there was a common denominator: Camello assisting on the left wing. The captain, Óscar Valentín, also joined the carousel of opportunities and his header, again from a corner, was cleared by the yellow goalkeeper. Cillessen had to fly to save a volley from Aridane. Iñigo Pérez’s people forgave again and again. They couldn’t hit the play so that it sounded The Final Countdown in Vallecas. The unmistakable soundtrack of the local goal. The locals continued doing their thing, making their way towards the tie with pick and shovel, while the visitors turned into a rock. They didn’t feel like music, or parties, or dancing. They hardly proposed anything.
The break did not change the plans of either of them. Cillessen flew again to save a left-footed shot from Isi, that uncorked the second part. Rayo insisted on strategic plays, but the yellow defense remained undaunted, constantly bailing out water. The shots of De Frutos and Álvaro were lost in the sky of the neighborhood and Sandro signed a counter that ended up out. Las Palmas was a team without a pulse that only pulsed in the corners. And this is how the 0-2 was forged. Sandro took the corner kick and this time it was Aridane who headed it into his own goal. The height of bad luck. It didn’t take Manu Fuster three minutes to give the Vallecanos the finishing touch and score 0-3 with an accurate shot from the outside.
Iñigo Pérez moved the bench desperately, while Diego Martínez rubbed his hands. Cillessen wore out his mitts blocking Embarba and came out of his goal to cut off an attempt by Trejo with his feet. El Rayo brought out the artillery, but not even the Chocota Not even Pedro Díaz were right with their shots. In a match that had gone crazy, Mata forgave and McKenna scored his own cross from De Frutos in the 94th minute.. These comings and goings left Las Palmas out of relegation and confirmed the resurrection, fruit of the Martinez effect.
