A legend of AS Saint-Etienne passed away this Friday, November 8. The Saint-Etienne club for which he played more than 200 matches, scoring 85 goals, the Algerian Rachid Mekhloufi died at the age of 88.

Born in Sétif on August 12, 1936, the pocket attacker (1.68 m) made his debut at USM Sétif before joining ASSE in 1954, notably becoming French champion in 1957.
A French international, he left France, via Switzerland, to join the ranks of the FLN team, a few months before the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.
He returned to France in 1962, a few months after the independence of Algeria, again in the Loire where he wore the Greens jersey until 1968, before two final seasons in Bastia.

During his years in Saint-Etienne, Rachid Mekhloufi was notably four times French champion (1957, 64, 67 and 68) and won the 1968 Coupe de France.
Best D1 player in 1964, 1966 and 1967, he is the second top scorer in the history of AS Saint-Etienne with 151 goals, behind Hervé Revelli and his 209 goals.
