Violent riots broke out around the Europa League football game between Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday evening. According to police, there were riots in several locations in the center of the Dutch capital – although it was not specified which side the violence came from. A total of 57 people were provisionally arrested on Thursday evening.
According to media reports, Israel’s government wants to fly out the fans of the guest club. According to the newspaper “Times of Israel” and the news portal “Ynet”, the supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv are to be brought to safety with two planes – this is what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered, according to the reports, citing the head of government’s office. Netanyahu called on the Dutch security forces to take decisive action against perpetrators of violence and to ensure the safety of Israeli football fans.
Disturbing violent video on social media
Several Israeli politicians spoke of disturbing scenes of violence in which pro-Palestinian perpetrators literally hunted Jews – referring to videos on social media. However, the recordings could not initially be verified and the Dutch police remained much more reserved in their presentation.
