Backa Topola – Lugano 4:1

Lugano suffers its first defeat in the third game of the Conference League. The Ticino team lost 1:4 to the underdog Backa Topola in northern Serbia.

Lugano’s misstep against the previously pointless and goalless FK TSC from Backa Topola was not to be expected. The first defeat and the first goals conceded by the Swiss champion aspirant in the competition’s new league system were well deserved given the strength in the small but pretty stadium in Backa Topola. Petar Stanic and Milos Pantovic each scored twice for the home team, while Mahmoud Belhadj only briefly reduced the score to 1-2 for Lugano.

Lugano’s downfall was particularly the weak initial phase. The Super League team, which played without the in-form offensive man Ignacio Aliseda but otherwise rotated little, was 0-1 behind after just four minutes. The shooting ratio was 0:6 after a quarter of an hour, 1:11 after 30 minutes from the guests’ perspective.

Stanic gave the hosts the lead after four minutes with a magnificent shot from 19 meters into the high corner, which had clearly been better in the early stages. The supposed timely equalizer by Hicham Mahou with the first chance did not count because of offside, the 1:2 by Belhadj after an hour did not last for a minute.

Lugano’s fight for a place in the top 8 and direct entry into the round of 16 continues in three weeks with the home game against Gent. The Belgians got their second win on Thursday against Omonia Nicosia (1-0).
