Faced with the controversy triggered by the deployment in the stands of a banner in support of Palestine, Wednesday, during the PSG-Atlético Champions League match (1-2), the CUP provided details in a press release.
A clarification. As the controversy continues to gain momentum, the Collectif Ultras Paris was keen to explain itself in a press release on the deployment on Wednesday evening, in a stand at the Parc des Princes, of a banner in support of Palestine at the occasion of the Champions League match between PSG and Atlético (1-2).
“In no case did we need either the help or the complacency of our club”
“Following the various controversies concerning the entertainment in the stands last night, some clarifications from us are necessary. In no case was this tifo intended to convey a message of hatred, quite the contrary, the message which accompanied is explicit and is a call for peace between peoples. In no case did we need the help or the complacency of our club for the creation or deployment”, thus specifies the CUP.
And added: “It was carried out entirely in a gymnasium in the Paris suburbs. This sensitive subject pushed us to make our arrangements in advance so as not to harm our club.” In reaction to the deployment of this pro-Palestinian tifo, the president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, and the general director of PSG, Victoriano Melero, were summoned to the Ministry of the Interior this Friday. They will be received at 10 a.m. by Othman Nasrou, Secretary of State for Citizenship and the Fight against Discrimination.
UEFA, for its part, announced that it would not initiate any proceedings against the capital club, considering that “the banner displayed could not be considered provocative or insulting in this specific case”. PSG affirmed that it had no “awareness of the plan to display such a message”, and said it was “firmly opposed to any message of a political nature in its stadium”.
