A medical emergency occurs during FC Bayern’s game against Benfica. In the end, tragically, any help comes too late.
A sad death has overshadowed FC Bayern’s hard-fought 1-0 win against Benfica in the Champions League. At 12:44 a.m. the Munich team announced that around an hour after the final whistle they had received the sad news that a fan had died on the way to the hospital.
“FC Bayern is at the side of the relatives in mourning,” wrote the German record champions.
The emergency occurred in Block 226 in the southeast of the arena. Various rescue workers, but also police officers and stewards were on duty from the 3rd minute. Stewards shielded the event with a black tarpaulin. FC Bayern confirmed during the half-time break that a person had to be resuscitated several times and had to be transported away under resuscitation. Unfortunately, in the end any help came too late.

The FC Bayern players were dismayed after the final whistle, but at that point they had no idea that the supporter had not made it.
“We noticed. Also why and why,” said Thomas Müller after the game when he was asked about the drama: “I think right before kick-off you could see what would have been possible in terms of atmosphere. The whole curve was jumping. But when something like that happens, it’s also a nice sign of solidarity that the fans don’t put their own party first, but also show a sign of humanity.”
Captain Manuel Neuer stated that “we weren’t really celebrating this victory in the dressing room. It was also mentioned that it had this background. We are very sorry about that.”
Max Eberl was also visibly shaken. “There are definitely more important things in life than football and the stadium showed this respect,” said Bayern’s sports director.
Since the situation in the stadium was unclear, the Bayern fans refrained from chanting or waving flags during the game. Shortly before half-time, all the flags in the south curve were rolled up.
