A tragic accident occurred Tuesday eveningon November 7, on the RER A platforms at Nation station. A man, who was near the edge of the platform, was struck by a train, resulting in the amputation of both his legs. The victim was quickly transported to the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital (Paris 13th arrondissement) in critical condition, but she died during the journey.
According to Le Parisien, thedramatic incident occurred around 10:30 p.m.. The victim, a man whose identity has not been specified, was at the head of the platform, near the rails. According to the first information collected, he was in the process of “do your business” at this location. This unusual behavior led him very close to the edge of the platform, in a particularly dangerous area due to the frequent passage of trains.
The RER cuts off both of his legs
RATP specified that the man “would have voluntarily gone down on the tracks”although the exact reasons for this descent remain unclear. It is not established whether this was an accidental, reckless act, or a deliberate decision. Once on the tracks, the man was hit by a train entering the station. The shock was extremely violent, causing theamputation of both legs.
Fatal injuries from the RER accident
The police and rescue teams intervened quickly, but despite their reactivity, the man’s injuries proved fatal. He died during his transfer to the hospital.
The accident caused significant disruptions to the networkand the RATP recalled the essential safety measures to be respected near the tracks, while announcing that an investigation would probably be opened to better understand the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
Following this accident, RER A traffic was interrupted in both directions between Vincennes and Auber stations until 12:30 a.m. The authorities were able to confirm the circumstances of the incident after viewing RATP video surveillance images.
To manage the consequences of this shutdown, additional agents have been deployed to inform and guide travelers towards alternative solutions. At the same time, metro line 1 was reinforced to absorb the increase in passengers.
