Donald Trump was elected again on Tuesday, November 5, but he is not yet inaugurated. Several steps are still to be taken, such as the vote of the electors, before he takes office at the White House.

The Americans have decided, they want Donald Trump in the White House again, after four years under Joe Biden. Although the election took place on Tuesday, November 5, there are still several steps before his inauguration.

First of all, the voters must elect Donald Trump. Indeed, the American presidential election is carried out by indirect universal suffrage, that is to say that citizens vote for electors, who in turn vote for the president. In view of the results, it is Donald Trump who will be chosen in the vote on December 17, 2024. The 50 states bring together 538 electors. For a presidential candidate to be elected, he or she needs at least an absolute majority, or 270 votes. By midday on November 6, Donald Trump had the assured vote of 276 of them, who traditionally respect the popular vote.

The results at Congress

Certification of these results will be announced on January 6, 2025 by Vice President Kamala Harris and Congress, made up of Representatives and Senators. Kamala Harris will therefore have to proclaim the victory of her opponent on Capitol Hill, after numerous insults towards her from the 47th President of the United States.

This date is now synonymous with apprehension for many Americans. Indeed, during the last certification of the results in Congress, hundreds of pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to contest the results which gave Joe Biden the winner on January 6, 2021.

The inauguration of the president

We will then have to wait until January 20, 2025 for Donald Trump to take office. “Inauguration Day” takes place in Washington DC, on the steps of the Capitol. As required by the Constitution, the new president must take an oath on the Bible: “I do solemnly swear to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and to the fullest extent of my ability, to safeguard, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The announcement of the allocation of different ministries is generally made immediately after the investiture, but no precise date is imposed.
