On the occasion of the All Saints' Day school holidays, work to revegetate the courtyard of the Gustave Roch public school in Aigrefeuille-sur-Maine (-Atlantique) have started. Initially planned for last summer, they were pushed back a few weeks.

An ambitious renaturation project

The renaturation project, designed by a design firm, aims to transform part of the school space into a green oasis. Work in progress includes the creation of vegetated islands in place of traditional asphalt areas.

In addition, a valley will be built, planted strips will be installed and trellises with climbing plants will add a touch of vertical greenery.

The project also includes tree plantingshrubs and perennial plants, as well as replacing synthetic turf with wood chips.

Children's facilities, such as sandboxes and play areas will be integrated, as well as wooden fencing.

Nearly €100,000 worth of work

With an estimated cost of €92,578 excluding tax, this initiative concerns a total surface area of 2,400 m² distributed between elementary and nursery school courtyards. Specifically, 720 m² will be transformed, with the removal of 660 m² of asphalt. At the heart of the project, 17 trees will be planted and 530 m² of green islands will be created.

“Everything that will allow us to have a space that is more in line with the expectations of parents, children, teachers and elected officials of the commission,” assured the mayor, Jean-Guy Cornu, at the occasion of the municipal council in May. Mayor who also explained that this project could be the subject ofaid from the green fund intended to accelerate 's energy transition “up to 80% of the amount excluding tax of the operation”. A grant request was made to this effect.
