The Union candidate for chancellor congratulates Donald Trump on his election victory in the USA – and advocates important conclusions in Europe.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has called for a stronger role for Europe in light of Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election. Merz congratulated the Republican candidate and highlighted the shared values and interests with the USA as well as the collective promise of protection as members of NATO. “It is now particularly in the hands of us Germans and Europeans to shape relations with our most important ally,” wrote Merz on Platform X.

“Europe must become capable of global politics on its own, take responsibility for its own security and lead its economies to new strength,” explained Merz, who is also the Union’s candidate for chancellor. “Only a Europe that is consolidated internally and united externally can be a partner on an equal footing with the United States of America.” The office of US President’s responsibility extends beyond its own national borders like no other in the world. That’s why he also wishes Trump “good luck in fulfilling America’s central role for peace, freedom and security in the world.”
