AP: Trump has 101 electoral votes, Harris has 38, projected from 16 states
According to AP forecasts, Republican Donald Trump leading in Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas.
Kamala Harris wins in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland, Rhode Island and Delaware.
If we talk about electoral votes, in these states Trump could get 101 votes and Harris 38.
The President of the United States is elected by the Electoral College. Each of the 50 American states, as well as the District of Columbia, has a certain number of electors. Their number depends on the population. A candidate can lose the popular vote and still win the Electoral College majority and become president. This has happened five times in US history, including Donald Trump's victory in 2016.
In most cases, the candidate with the most votes in a state automatically receives the support of all of its electors. But there are two exceptions: Nebraska and Maine. Nebraska votes heavily Republican, but Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris has a chance to win at least one electoral vote there. Split electoral votes could in principle happen in both of these states.
To win the election, an absolute majority – at least 270 electoral votes – is required. If none of the candidates reaches the required number, the President is elected by the House of Representatives of the US Congress, and the Vice President by the Senate.
