Traditionally conservative, Georgia was narrowly won by Joe Biden four years ago. This Tuesday, November 5, Donald Trump won the 16 electors of this state against Kamala Harris, announce our colleagues at CNN.

Donald Trump wins in the state of Georgia against Kamala Harris, according to a result put forward by the American channel CNN this Tuesday, November 5. The Republican camp thus wins the 16 major voters of this key state in the south-east of the country and the billionaire is getting closer to the White House.

This is the second key state won by the billionaire after North Carolina, and therefore the second setback for the Democratic candidate.

Long firmly supported by the Republicans, Georgia has recently become a “Swing State”. In 2020, the state narrowly swung to the Democratic side when Joe Biden won, buoyed by higher-than-usual turnout. That year, everything was decided by 12,000 votes.

New political balances

Georgia has a largely Republican rural population but is experiencing demographic renewal which is changing the political balance.

The Atlanta metropolitan region is now establishing itself as a globalized economic center, hosting the headquarters of large companies like Coca-Cola, or more recently the finance or communications sectors.

“Atlanta has become the demographic capital of the state with a black, urban, educated population, largely won over to the Democratic camp,” Aurore Portet, specialist in American politics, explained to BFMTV.

Voting under high tension

It is in this state that Donald Trump asked, in 2020, the Secretary of State to “find” the 11,780 votes he was missing. Georgia then concentrated the accusations, however unfounded, of large-scale fraud. Donald Trump has since still not recognized his defeat in this state.

In 2023, the Republican was indicted for these illicit attempts to manipulate the results of this election.

To limit suspicions of fraud, the Georgia Elections Commission this year approved a new regulation requiring assessors to count ballots by hand, in addition to counting ballots by machines.
