NYT Needle and Lead Analyst Nate Cohn Say Kamala Harris Win Now a ‘Tall Order’

New York Times chief analyst and pollster Nate Cohn on Tuesday night said that Vice President Kamala Harris sweeping the still outstanding states needed for her to win the election was still possible, but a “tall order.”

In an update around 9:20pm Eastern, Cohn said on the live NYT election feed that Harris has a tough road, after the Needle – the live election tracker for the paper – moved the election to “leaning” to a Donald Trump win. It had been listed as a “toss-up.”

Cohn wrote:

For the first time tonight, our estimates indicate that the race leans toward Donald Trump. He is a narrow but clear favorite to win Georgia and North Carolina. If he carries those states, Kamala Harris will probably need to sweep Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to win — a real possibility, but a tall order nonetheless. We have very little data from those states, and it will be a long time until we do.

A short time later, Cohn noted that Trump was the clear favorite in Georgia.

With more than 75 percent of the vote counted in Georgia, Trump is a clear favorite. A lot of votes remain to be counted in the Atlanta area, where Harris has shown some strength. She will need to outperform our expectations there to close the gap.

At 10 minutes after 10pm, the Needle showed the race as a LEANING TRUMP and likewise called the task ahead for Harris a “tall order.”
