ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams was reelected Tuesday night to metro Atlanta’s 5th congressional district, defeating Republican John “Bongo” Salvesen in a district that was represented by the late John Lewis for more than three decades.
Based in central Fulton and parts of DeKalb and Clayton counties, the majority Black district includes almost three-fourths of Atlanta and some surrounding suburbs, including East Point, Druid Hills, and Forest Park.
Williams was reelected to a third term in Atlanta’s 5th District. She first ran in 2020 following the death of Democratic Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights hero who held the seat for more than 30 years. In addition to serving in Congress, Williams is also chair of the Georgia Democratic Party.
