One thing is certain: it will be insanely tight. And so it becomes a rollercoaster of emotions. Because while in some states counting is not even necessary, there are also seven swing states where it can go either way. Who will make it where, and who will be the ultimate winner? Follow all the results of the American presidential elections here from Wednesday shortly after midnight.
Number of electoral votes
Overview by state
On their ballot, Americans color the dot in front of the name of the two people they want to see become president and vice president. But nevertheless, their vote does not go to those two people, but to their respective electors in their state. Together they all form the electoral college. There are 538 in total, so to win you have to get 270 behind you.
The number of electoral votes per state depends on the number of inhabitants. California has 54, Alaska has 3. After each census – which is organized every ten years – the number of electoral votes per state is adjusted. This last happened in 2020. Then, for example, Florida gained one, while Pennsylvania lost another electoral vote.
