A WakeMed nurse faces felony charges after police say she
stole fentanyl from the hospital.
According
to court documents, Kellianne McGuire had access to the drug by virtue of her
job as a registered nurse and knowingly stole 2500 mL of fentanyl from an
IV bag.
Court
records indicate the incident happened on Oct. 19. WakeMed police arrested her
11 days later, on Oct. 30.
“We are
aware of this matter. She was employed as a nurse, and WakeMed has taken
appropriate measures,” a WakeMed spokesperson wrote WRAL in an
email.
The WakeMed spokesperson said McGuire is no longer an employee of the hospital system.
In
a 2021 WakeMed employee newsletter, McGuire was listed for serving 10
years with the health system. McGuire received the DAISY award in 2019 for
her work as a critical ICU nurse.
McGuire faces two felony charges: embezzling/diverting a
controlled substance by registrant/employee and obtaining possession of a
controlled substance by fraud/forgery.
During
an Oct. 31 court appearance, the court appointed an attorney to represent McGuire.
McGuire is out on bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Nov. 19.
