World champion Vanthoor wants to forget the “shit competition”: “It doesn’t matter, we are in history books”
Laurens Vanthoor has won the prestigious world title in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), although the final race in Bahrain was one to quickly forget. “Only the world title counts,” says Vanthoor.
A spot in the top 8? That had to work out in the final round in Bahrain for Laurens Vanthoor and his Porsche teammates André Lotterer and Kévin Estre. Especially since a 6th place was their lowest result this season.
But things did not go well for the World Cup leaders in the 8 Hours of Bahrain. They only finished 11th, but were still allowed to celebrate because their rivals had failed. “It was the biggest shit match in years,” Vanthoor gloated.
“But it doesn’t matter, we are world champions and that is all that matters. I still don’t have many words for it, I can’t place it yet.”
Vanthoor owes his world title mainly to a very regular season with two victories (in Fuji and Losail) and three podium places. “We rode flawlessly for an entire season. That was the basis of our success.”
“The race in Bahrain was a drama, but in two days we will forget this. We are in the history books. That counts, the rest doesn’t matter.”
