Inter Miami falls 2-1 to Atlanta United in playoff Game 2

Inter Miami CF went down 2-1 against Atlanta United in a tense Saturday night showdown, marking their second loss in the best-of-three opening round of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Defender David Martínez gave Miami fans hope with his first-ever MLS goal, slamming one into the net in the 40th minute at the packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender kept Inter Miami alive early, making crucial saves like his 28th-minute block of a powerful shot from Atlanta’s Alexey Miranchuk.

But it was Martínez who set the tone, converting a pass from Federico Redondo, who picked up his fourth assist of the season in the process. With Miami in the lead, it seemed like they might pull off an upset.

However, Atlanta’s Derrick Williams brought things level in the 58th minute, and despite Miami’s efforts, Atlanta’s Xande Silva netted the game-winner in the dying moments of added time.

The 2-1 loss leaves Inter Miami in a do-or-die situation as they face Atlanta again in their final shot to keep playoff dreams alive.
