Marcelo Vieira says goodbye to Fluminense after controversy with coach Mano Menezes

The dispute with Mano Menezes did not go unnoticed in Brazil, and Marcelo Vieira, one of Fluminense’s most iconic players, left the Rio de Janeiro team after reaching an agreement with the club’s board.

Marcelo returned to ‘Flu’ in 2023, after shining in Europe, where he wore the colors of Real Madrid for 16 years, in addition to a six-month spell at Olympiacos, in Greece.

On his return, he established himself as one of the pillars of the team where he developed as a player: he was vital for the early conquests of the Copa Libertadores and Recopa Sudamericana that graced the Brazilian club’s trophy.

After overcoming a series of muscle problems, Marcelo returned to the pitch in September. However, with just four starts in the last eleven games, his playing time began to dwindle.

During this period, he came on as a substitute on four occasions and was not even included in one match or another. However, the match against Grêmio led to his abrupt departure from Fluminense.

Just as he was preparing to enter the field in the 89th minute, a comment changed his coach’s attitude: it not only ignited his anger, but also led to Marcelo being immediately returned to the bench.

Subsequently, with Felipe Melo being sent off and a penalty converted by Reinaldo, the Porto Alegre team tied the match at the Maracanã Stadium. After all, the controversy was the final straw.

His departure from the club occurred in a manner as mysterious as his walk to the bank: Fluminense announced the termination of his contract with the promise to deal with the matter internally and wished him success in his future endeavors.
