After a bitter end, a new start
After a bitter end, a new start

After the resignation of the then mayor, René Walther, who moved to Arbon, the interim mayor, Jürgen Häberli, ran as a candidate for the municipal council very late in the second round of voting and thus failed against the current mayor, Hans-Jörg Saner. Now there was a bang in the local council. Häberli announced his immediate resignation from the local council. The daily newspapers reported.

Häberli should have asked himself – why these events happened – and perhaps questioned his actions in the community over the past few years. If his work had been so successful and popular in the community, he would have had an easy time as quasi-community president. The voters had a different opinion and decided.

When Jürgen Häberli handed over his office to Hans-Jörg Saner after the election campaign – you could see Häberli’s discomfort at a ceremony at the Schützenhaus in Landschlacht – no honest loser looks like that. Already that day, some people from the community were “missing” – a sign that something was already wrong.

A real ocean captain took the helm

Hans-Jörg Saner took over the helm from the outgoing mayor at a very difficult time. Large projects – such as the port and the construction of the residential complex in Teupelacker and others – were pending and required a competent and hard-working coordinator – who would get involved and take on responsibility with a lot of personal commitment and who would keep an eye on the legal obstacles that are often overwhelming these days raises costs. The projects were implemented confidently and within budget or are nearing completion.

The community is fortunate that today a successful and qualified businessman from the private sector is willing to take over the agenda of a community and wants to work for the common good in his community of residence. It is precisely because of this “political agitation” like that carried out by the now failed Mr. Häberli that many community leaders are giving up their positions because they did not stand for such a kindergarten. They are still limited in their work because of constant justifications to the press. The current “second step” by the failed Mr. Häberli in the newspaper also requires time to answer – time that is actually missing.

Not so with Hans-Jörg Saner. He has remained steadfast and has now rejected the old Häberli entourage’s demands for his resignation. I congratulate him on this! In conclusion, it can be said: The whole thing led to something positive in the end. A new start can begin – we can shake hands – new members come to the local council – we can return to constructive work. I wish Mr. Saner all the best!
