Entire sections of southern Spain were devastated by “
the equivalent of more than a year of rain » in just eight hours, with Valencia being one of the worst hit cities, resulting in massive deaths and destruction. The situation has led to the cancellation of many matches, with Real Madrid's game in Valencia this weekend under threat, prompting messages of love, prayer and support from several star players.
At least 95 people have died in southeastern Spain, with an unconfirmed number of people believed to be missing. Valencia appeared to be the worst-hit city, with images showing piled-up vehicles and devastated neighborhoods, and Spain's transport minister said the high-speed line between the city and Madrid was significantly damaged.
Deadly floods in Spain
Many Spanish stars shared their love and prayers on social media with everyone affected by the floods, including Luka Modric and Thibaut Courtois, who joined Bellingham and Vini Jr in paying their respects. Bellingham posted on Instagram: “ My deepest condolences to all the families who lost loved ones due to the floods in Valencia. Sending lots of love and strength! ❤️❤️❤️”.
Along with players, clubs like Barcelona observed minutes of silence before training sessions and joined in tributes on social media.
More matches are being canceled as the scale of the flooding is recognized and rescue efforts continue, with warnings in place in the regions of Catalonia and northern Spain. While Spanish authorities expect storms to subside in the coming hours in affected areas, coastal regions will remain under weather alert.
