A publication viewed nearly three million times. A simple photo of a collage made in by the feminist artist LaDame Quicolle, which shows Gisèle Pelicot walking with a determined step. Hundreds of comments, in all languages: “You are a heroine for all women” from a Canadian, or a Dutch girl who admits she doesn't understand “where you found the courage to seek justice”. An account whose number of subscribers doubles in just a few hours, going from 6,000 followers on Saturday October 26 to more than 13,000 this Sunday October 27. And now the following message appears: “This account does not exist.”

In fact, everything is a lie. CheckNews has obtained confirmation. The 71-year-old woman at the heart of the Mazan rape case, who filed a complaint against her husband Dominique Pelicot, is not behind the account created in her name on the social network is associated with him. These fraudulent accounts appear to be part of an attempt to recover the story of Gisèle Pelicot, whose husband is currently on trial in (alongside 50 other men) for having drugged and raped her. A case that went around the world.

Catalan publication

Several clues point to false accounts. Created on September 7, profile “Nabilla is a being of light”then writes the account. However, the day before this tweet, Gisèle Pelicot had made it known, through her lawyers, that she refused this money – and as a result, the ex-reality star had also decided to close her kitty.

In a press release sent to the media on September 6, attorneys Stéphane Babonneau and Antoine Camus indicated that their client is appealing “with the greatest moderation on social networks, in no way wishes the opening of online support pots and requests the closure of those already open”. While thanking “all the people who have massively sent testimonies of support from all over the world since the start of the trial”she nevertheless wished “imperatively preserve the dignity and serenity of the debates currently being held”they wrote.

Another inconsistency is the fact that the accounts supposedly attributed to Gisèle Pelicot seem to be supplied from Spain. In the bio of account X, the location is indicated in Spanish ( instead of France). In addition, on one of the publications of the Instagram account, part of the description is written in Catalan. “You are not alone. Thanks to you I have the strength to fight this battle»we read. Or in French: “You are not alone. Thanks to you I have the strength to fight this battle.” However, the only element that links Gisèle Pelicot to Spain is a message of support in Catalan stuck near the Avignon courthouse.

Note that the X account in the name of Gisèle Pelicot had also relayed, on September 17, a video from the conspiracy collective Verity France. A choice that raises questions. After not having published anything since September 27, he returned to service a month later. On Instagram, the profile only had four publications posted between September 17 and 23, and has only been active again since Saturday, October 26. There we mainly find photos of demonstrations in support of Gisèle Pelicot.

“Vigilance alert”

Speaking to CheckNews, one of Gisèle Pelicot's lawyers, Antoine Camus, indicates that she has nothing to do with her accounts. “I confirm that Ms. Pelicot is in no way on social networks and does not intend to be there”he replies. Journalist Juliette Campion, who covers the trial for France Info, obtained the same confirmation from one of Gisèle Pelicot's sons.

Antoine Camus continues: “If we had less of our heads in control, Stéphane Babonneau and myself, we would obviously take care of closing these accounts for our client, which is physically impossible for us to do at present.” Maître Camus also notes that in the previously released press release, his client had already stressed that “the greatest vigilance is required”. But because it seems necessary to repeat this “vigilance alert”a press release will be sent again at the beginning of next week, he indicates.

Since our contact with Gisèle Pelicot's counsel, the X account has been made inaccessible, the social network now indicating that “this account does not exist”. A deletion undoubtedly following the numerous reports made in recent hours. The Instagram account, meanwhile, is still online. And has some 2,600 followers.

What were the intentions of the person or people responsible for funding these accounts? It is impossible, for the moment, to answer this question, as our messages have not received a response from them.
