You shouldn’t leave your umbrella at home this Thursday, October 17. Torrential rains hit Lyon and its metropolis this morning. Big storms also break out. This stormy disturbance is expected to last all day, according to Météo forecasts.

The Rhône is placed on orange rain-flood alert all day.

Rain “worthy of the tropics” in Lyon

The expected amount of precipitation is of the order of 40 millimeters. Temperatures are around 17 degrees around 9 a.m. For this afternoon, the storms will continue. Around 30 millimeters of precipitation is expected over the period. The thermometer will indicate 21 degrees around 2 p.m.

For this evening, the weather will be changeable and accompanied by scattered showers. The expected amount of precipitation is around 15 millimeters. The temperature will be around 16 degrees around 8 p.m.

“Rains worthy of the tropics in progress in Lyon. Be extremely careful, floods, mudslides and floods are feared by this evening! Limit your travel,” advises Romain Weber, forecaster at Lyon Météo.

Floods south of Lyon

In total, more than 90 millimeters of precipitation could fall on the capital of Gaul in one day. “Floods are starting to increase in Givors and throughout the south of the Rhône,” notes Yannick Devesvre, storm chaser.

The Rhône firefighters tell us that numerous interventions are underway this Thursday morning.

“Exceptional” precipitation accumulations in the region

“France is going to experience another extremely rainy day. This time, it is especially the southern half which will be affected with accumulations frequently exceeding 50 mm by Friday morning, up to more than 200 mm in the Cévennes! », Warned meteorologist Guillaume Séchet the day before.

Indeed, the rainfall totals in the Cévennes are already “exceptional”. In less than 36 hours, we note: 571 mm in Mayres (Ardèche), 471 mm in Barnas (Ardèche), 445 mm in Villefort (Lozère), 376 mm in Montpezat-sous-Bauzon (Ardèche), 364 mm in Sablières (Ardèche).
