The Alpes-Maritimes, Var and Ardèche have joined Lozère and Gard in orange alert for thunderstorms and/or rain-flooding, Météo-France announced early Wednesday, which is considering an alert at least until midnight for the five departments.
Lozère and Gard had already been placed at this level of vigilance on Tuesday afternoon, for rain-flooding and thunderstorms, due to an autumnal episode in the Cévennes described as “classic” by the forecaster. The latter, for example, recorded 97 millimeters of rain in Rousses, in Lozère.
“200 to 300 millimeters” are expected
In the Cévennes, widespread accumulations of “200 to 300 millimeters” are expected on the Cévennes relief, with “points at 350 millimeters or more”over 48 hours, by the end of the day Thursday, warns the meteorological agency.
After writing at 6:00 a.m. that an extension of vigilance to Ardèche was not excluded, Météo-France placed the department in orange but only for rain-flooding. Rains in the Cévennes “will weaken temporarily in the evening but will reactivate on Thursday”adds the same source.
Concerning the two departments of PACA, she mentions a “intense rain-storm episode” justifying an orange thunderstorm and rain-flood alert.
Thunderstorms
“In the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes, during the day on Wednesday, sometimes not very mobile storms could produce 80 to 120 millimeters in a few hours”concludes the public establishment.
According to its latest update, the Alpes-Maritimes and Var will no longer be affected by orange alerts on Thursday. On the other hand, they must remain in force in Lozère, Gard and Ardèche until around 9:30 p.m.
