Michel Barnier survives a motion of censure

Almost no MP other than those from the New Popular Front supported the motion of censure against Michel Barnier.

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier survived a first vote of no confidence on Tuesday. The motion was signed by 192 deputies from the left-wing New Popular Front. But the left bloc failed to overthrow the new government because the far-right National Rally refused to support the motion.

It took 289 votes to dismiss Michel Barnier’s new government, but the motion received only 197 votesa little more than the 192 signatories of the text. “The existence of this government, in its composition and direction, constitutes a denial of the results of the last elections,” we can read in the text. As for the left-wing deputies, President Macron should have chosen the candidate they presented as Prime Minister, since “the New Popular Front gathered the most seats. It was then up to him to propose a government to the president and text by majority of text.
