Author of a double last night against Columbus Crew, Lionel Messi allowed Inter Miami to win 3-2 and win the MLS regular season. A victory which should allow the American franchise to validate its ticket for the next Club World Cup in which PSG will compete.
As rumors of a postponement of the Club World Cup began to emerge in Italy in recent days, FIFA unveiled last weekend the 12 stadiums which will host the 63 matches of the competition from June 15 to July 13 next in the United States. If the world body is still looking for broadcasters and sponsors, the competition is not in question for the moment.
To date, 30 out of 32 teams have qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup, including PSG and eleven other European teams. There are still two tickets available. The first will be awarded to the next winner of the Copa Libertadores, who will be known on November 30. The second will go to a team from the host country, namely an American franchise. Which ? Inter Miami, probably.
Until then, FIFA has not announced what criteria it intends to use to designate the qualified host team for the new format of the Club World Cup, which will be played every four years. Many were betting on Inter Miami so that Lionel Messi would be present for this FIFA competition which is causing so much controversy and a real lack of enthusiasm eight months before its kick-off.
Messi’s Inter Miami on track to qualify for the Club World Cup
Last night, Inter Miami won 3-2 against Columbus Crew thanks to a double from Lionel Messi and another goal from Luis Suarez. A victory which ensures the Miami team will finish at the top of the MLS regular phase, pending the play-offs and the MLS Cup final, which will be held on December 7.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, FIFA should not wait until December 7 to decide and should choose Messi’s team to represent the host country. The draw for the Club World Cup must also take place in December, on a date which remains to be defined. Finally, note that the Inter Miami stadium, the Hard Rock Stadium, is one of the 12 stadiums selected for the Club World Cup and it could host the opening match according to Ben Jacobs.
Two years after leaving PSG free and with a certain resentment, not to say a certain ingratitude, Lionel Messi could therefore return to PSG in the summer of 2025, even if we will still have to wait for confirmation of the presence of Inter Miami, expected in October, and the draw, normally in December, to be sure.
