Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States, celebrates his 100th birthday on October 1, becoming the first American president to reach this age. Born October 1, 1924, he is also a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Plains, his hometown in Georgia, is preparing for this important event. “Not many people make it to 100 years on this earth, and when someone does, and uses that time for good, it’s worth celebrating,” said Jason Carter, grandson of the former president, to the Seattle Times.

Festivities marked by a flypast, concerts and ceremonies reflect the importance of this celebration. Born in a rural town, Jimmy Carter worked his way from the family farm to the White House, which he occupied from 1977 to 1981.

One of his major accomplishments as president was the signing of the Camp David Accords, which led to the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty in 1979. After his term, he returned to Plains to live.

To celebrate its centennial, the town has planned events including a concert at its former high school and a naturalization ceremony for 100 people. “Jimmy is a good man, a godly man, and that’s what people love about him,” said Plains resident Carl Lowell.

For more than 40 years, Jimmy Carter led the Carter Center, working to promote peace, fight disease and promote hope. In 2002, these efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.

President Joe Biden honored him in a statement, describing him as a “moral force.” In politics, Carter remains engaged, expressing his intention to vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.

Currently, he is receiving palliative care at Plains Hospice. His last public appearance was in November, during his wife’s funeral.
