6 deaths are to be deplored in Rwanda because of the Marburg virus (MVD), a hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola, as part of an epidemic which has affected 26 people throughout the country, Rwandan Minister of Health, Sabin, said on Saturday Nsanzimana.

During a program broadcast on national television, Nsanzimana specified that the infected people are mostly health professionals, calling on Rwandan citizens “to remain vigilant and to strengthen preventive measures by guaranteeing hygiene, washing with soap, disinfecting your hands and avoiding contact with infected people.

In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Health highlighted the need to implement reinforced preventive measures following confirmed cases of Marburg virus disease.

The Marburg virus is transmitted through blood and bodily fluids, and affects several organs at once. It takes its name from the German town where it was first identified in 1967, in a laboratory where employees had come into contact with infected monkeys from Uganda. It has since affected several African countries, including the DRC in 2023.
