My success is that of all of Lebanon

Here Beirut went to meet Hady Habib, the “hero of Melbourne”, the first Lebanese player to win a match in a Grand Slam tournament. In an exclusive interview, he looks back on his historic journey at the Australian Open, his preparation for future challenges, notably the Davis Cup, and his dream of developing in Lebanon. With words full of humility and passion, Hady shares his values, his love for Lebanon and his desire to see sport unite the Lebanese, beyond divisions.

You return to Lebanon after your historic performance at the Australian Open. How do you feel about this triumphant welcome that the Lebanese people have given you?

It's really moving and humbling to feel the support from my country. Representing Lebanon at this level is an honor, and seeing people proud of my achievements fills me with gratitude. I play for moments like this: to give back to Lebanon and show that we are capable of shining on the world stage. The love and welcome I received reminds me why I do all of this.

You are the first Lebanese player to win a match in a Grand Slam tournament. What are your most memorable moments in Melbourne and what did you learn from the experience?

The most memorable moment was stepping onto the court knowing I was making history for Lebanon. Winning that first round match and hearing my name associated with my country was incredibly special. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and belief in yourself. Playing at this level requires resilience, and it has boosted my confidence to compete with the best players in the world.

In February, you will face Peru in the Davis Cup. How are you preparing for this challenge and what are your expectations for this crucial competition?

The Davis Cup is always a special competition because I am not only playing for myself, but for Lebanon. My preparation involves working closely with my coach, focusing on my physical and mental condition. Peru is a strong team and we expect tough matches. But I'm confident in my preparation and excited to give it everything I have. Our goal is to make Lebanon proud.

My message is simple: believe in your dreams and work every day to achieve them. No matter the challenges or obstacles, your determination and efforts can take you far. Lebanon may be a small country, but our talent and passion are limitless. Always remember that hard work and perseverance always pay off in the end, and continue to represent your roots with pride.

What are your long-term goals, both personally and for the development of tennis in Lebanon? Do you plan to play an active role in supporting young talents in the country?

Personally, my goal is to continue to improve, climb the rankings and play at the highest level of the sport on a consistent basis. For Lebanon, I dream of making tennis more accessible and creating opportunities for young talents to flourish. I want to use my platform to inspire and support the next generation of players, whether through mentoring, creating programs or improving infrastructure. Tennis in Lebanon has so much potential and I want to be part of its growth.

You are aware that your sporting exploits have succeeded in uniting the Lebanese, beyond ethnic, political and social differences. How do you feel about this impact on national unity?

It is the greatest honor to bring people together through sport. Lebanon has been through so much, and if my success can offer even a moment of hope, pride or joy to my people, that means everything to me. Sport has a unique power.
