Jannik Sinner, after the victory in the semi-final, answered journalists’ questions at the press conference with his usual calmness, also talking about what awaits him on Sunday against Zverev

After the great victory in the semifinals against Ben Shelton, Jannik Sinneranswering questions from journalists present in the press room, analyzed the match and the comeback in the first set: “It was a crucial set, we both felt good, I tried to stay calm in the important moments, I knew that the first set was important especially when he served for the set, and then in the tie-break I played solidly and that gave me the confidence needed for the other two sets.”

The Italian player was also asked if he felt unbeatable at the moment, and immediately received a negative answer: “I know I work a lot, I try to stay calm, I never take anything for granted and, you know, I’m just very well prepared. I’ve had an intense and work-filled off-season, and every day I follow a routine to improve“.

When asked if anything had changed after becoming number one, the South Tyrolean replied with another peremptory ‘no’. “Nothing changed after becoming number one. It’s an important position, but I’m 23, I’m not perfect, and I have a lot to work on. There are areas where I can improve, and this is precisely what we are focusing our work on. Every day is a great challenge: there is always a different opponent and you try to understand what is happening. Sometimes you encounter difficulties, you try to find the best solution for that day and do your best. Everyone makes mistakes, no one is perfect.”

Jannik he also spoke about the other semi-final and the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic after just one set played: “I didn’t see the match live, I was warming up, I watched it afterwards. It’s unpleasant to see these things, especially in a Grand Slam semifinal. But if Novak withdrew, it means he had a serious problem. He has already won a tournament here despite physical problems, and always tries to give his best. He has always given so much to this sport.”

The world number one then declared to be calm while waiting for finale: “I’ve been in this position before, which is good. Sascha has been there too. Finals are a little different, but very exciting when you get there, regardless of the tournament. It’s a great feeling: only two players left and you try to play your best tennis. I’m trying to take the pressure off myself, although it’s easier said than done, and enjoy the moment. I will do my best to succeed and fully enjoy this experience.”

When asked if he thinks he will experience different emotions this time compared to last year’s final, if he will be more or less nervous, he replied with the usual calm that distinguishes him: “I don’t know, I will only be able to answer on Sunday. I don’t know how I’ll feel, I hope I’m okay, but like I said, anything can happen. Sundays are exciting days. Obviously there’s a lot of pressure, a lot of expectations, a lot of attention, but in the end it’s just a tennis match. It has to be fun, something beautiful, and I try to keep that mentality. I will try to make the right decisions at the right time: if I succeed, great, otherwise the final is still a great result.”

The South Tyrolean then concluded by analyzing the match with Zverev and the type of battle that awaits him: “It will be a mental challenge, but obviously we already know each other, we have played several times. It will be a difficult match for both, even on a physical level. He played great matches to reach the final. It’s difficult to say who the favorite is, because anything can happen. But these questions will be answered on Sunday, now it is impossible to say.”

And we all can’t wait for Sunday to arrive so we can cheer for Jannik together!
