Jannik Sinner beat American Ben Shelton in the semi-final on Friday at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne and flies to the final of the Australian Open.
On Sunday, against the German Alexander Zverev, he could repeat last year’s victory against Danil Medvedev.
Despite some physical difficulties in the last two matches, Sinner seems favored to win, as number one in the ranking and defending champion.
But Zverev is no small opponent: he is number two in the world, although he is about 4 thousand points away from Sinner’s first position.
Sinner wins in a closer match than you might think
The victory came at 11.24 Italian time, when Sinner he closed the third set after 2 and a half hours of play with a score of 6-2, same result as the second set.
Yet, the match had started badly for the world number one, who started by losing serve. Shelton had chances to win the set twice. Sinner, however, held firm, responding blow for blow and winning the first set 7-6.
-The world number one’s angry reaction discouraged Shelton, a native of Atalanta and world number 20. In the end, the curiosity to know remains what would have happened if the American had won the first set and continued to play with the momentum of those who are ahead.
Australian Open final, Djokovic is rooting for Zverev on Sunday
In the final in Melbourne, as mentioned, there will be Alexander Zverev. For him it is the first final in Australia.
to the tedesco one set was enough to reach his third final in a grand slam set against Novak Djokovic: in fact, the Serbian tennis player withdrew from the Open due to injury and has already said that his opponent deserves to win the tournament.
We’ll see if he’s right.
Zverev also thanked Djokovic for motivating him.
